During the weekend of 18 - 19 January 2025, at the Farnham Pottery, visitors wil be

able to see a selection of works by local artist and musician Kwei Eden. Following

the death of Kwei, from cancer, in July 2024, co-curators Katherine Smith and Hannah Facey are following her wishes and organising an exhibition of her work.

Kwei had a varied and rich art practice that encompassed drawing, painting,

sculpture and performance, of which a selection will be on display during the exhibition.

In her early works, Kwei worked predominantly with coloured pencil, creating beautiful and engaging abstracts that dealt with both emotions and the theme of the mundane. On the Fine Art degree programme at University for the Creative Arts Farnham, she became a performance artist, but she always returned to the repetition and exploration of colour and form of her earlier work, producing drawings as a way of kick-starting new performance work.

A core thread throughout her practice was her consistent and energetic dedication to decision-making through doing, learning something about herself and the work each time it was presented. At the same time, she wanted to challenge the viewer to question their own behaviour in the context of contemporary living.

Regarding her degree show installation in 2019, she said, "I want to draw attention to perfection. How we are driven to strive for this through the internal expectations we place on ourselves based on external pressure and cultural influences around us."

She described it as "a perpetual state of change, flux. An imperfect chaotic mess where the desire for perfection is thwarted by destruction of preparation and

mundane actions."

She exhibited across the region, showing work at Pallant House, Chichester, where she won the Biennial Open Art Competition in 2009.

More recent exhibitions include:

Raw and Unseasoned (Oxford House, Bethnal Green); Prefix is Post (Lewisham Art House);

Think Thunk (The Crypt, Euston);

Same Shit, Different Day (University for the Creative Arts, Farnham);

Change: For Better or Worse (Hundred Years Gallery, Hoxton). As well as attending UCA, Kwei was a member of the band Eden Blacklist, who have been performing locally for a number of years.

There will be a Private View on Saturday 18th January from 6 - 9pm.

Kwei's main wish before her death was that she should be remembered; Kwei would love that people are gathering and sharing memories of her while surrounded by her passions.
