About the Event
Established in 1873 by local potter Absalom Harris, The Farnham Pottery operated for over 150 years and was run by five successive generations of the Harris family as a renowned production pottery. Many well-known local potters learnt their craft at the Pottery and today it’s a carefully preserved example of a Victorian country pottery with a host of charming architectural features. The potters of the day delighted in demonstrating their skills in making ornate chimney pots, a massive catalogue of garden and domestic terracotta as well as the famous owl jugs.
Philip Harris, member of the fifth generation of Harris', will give a talk providing an exclusive view into the site’s history and exploring traditional methods of making and decorating pottery wares and the process of firing up the big kiln which is preserved, the survivor of what was once five kilns on the site in the heyday of the business.
